Details of Staff Nurse Jane Roberts of the QAIMNSR during World War One who was lost at sea during the sinking of HMHS Salta
Staff Nurse Jane Roberts served in the QAIMNSR during the Great War. She was a head teacher's daughter from Dolgellau, Meirionnydd in North/Mid Wales.
She died when His Majesty's Hospital Ship Salta was sunk off Le Havre on 10 April 1917. She was lost at sea and we think her body was never recovered. Her name appears on the Salta Memorial at Ste Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, Normandy, France and on the memorial at York Minster. Seven other QAs also lost their lives that day.
Her memorial at Tywyn Church in the county of Gwynedd (formerly Merionethshire) in Wales has her title as Sister.
Hand written details at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission interestingly refer to her as being in the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Special Service. We haven't heard reference to this before.
